The training grounds hummed with the sound of clashing weapons and heavy breaths, but Garrick Tavis’s attention was focused on the figure in front of him. She moved with a surprising fluidity, her small frame deceptive. She was no Violet Sorrengail, less prone to injury, more determined to prove herself despite the odds stacked against her, but still, a fragile thing compared to the towering giants who filled the Riders Quadrant.

“Keep your feet apart,” Garrick said, his voice rough as he stepped behind her, adjusting the grip of the sword in her hands. “If you lose your footing, you’re dead.”

She nodded, her face a full of concentration as her fingers tightened around the hilt. Her name escaped his lips far too often these days, softly spoken in encouragement or barked as a command. She wasn’t a natural at combat, but she had heart. Every time she fell, she got back up, bruised and determined.

At first, he’d thought her tenacity was foolish. But now? It was something he couldn’t help but admire.

“You’re doing better,” he found himself saying after she executed a clean strike, her blade cutting through the air. The small smile she shot him in response caught him off guard, warmth blooming in his chest.

“Better doesn’t mean good,” she replied, her voice light but self-deprecating.

Garrick huffed, crossing his arms. “Good is a long way off, but you’ll get there.”

As the days blurred together, Garrick saw her transform. She learned to fight with more precision, more grit. She listened, adapted, and, against all odds, thrived in the chaos of the gauntlet. Watching her climb the walls and dodge the deadly traps with the agility of someone twice her strength had been both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. When she crossed the finish line, battered but victorious and alive, Garrick had felt a pride that he wasn’t sure he’d earned.

Somewhere along the way, he’d stopped thinking of her as just another cadet. She wasn’t a burden or a project anymore. She was her. Her determination, her quiet resilience, her sharp wit, it was impossible not to be drawn to her. And now, as the Threshing approached, Garrick found himself in a state of constant anxiety.

Dragons didn’t care about heart or determination. They cared about strength and power. And as much as she had grown, Garrick feared it wouldn’t be enough.

He wasn’t there when it happened, and the waiting nearly drove him mad. Every moment stretched into an eternity, his imagination filling in the gaps with horrors. What if all the dragons rejected her? What if they killed her? Or worse, what if she failed to survive the bonding itself?

When the bell tolled, Garrick bolted for the arena. His heart thundered in his chest as the first bonded riders began returning, their dragons’ massive forms filling the sky with shadow and fire. He scanned the horizon frantically, barely breathing until he saw her.

She was alive.

She dismounted a sleek, cobalt-blue dragon with grace, but he didn’t care about her poise. She was there, whole, breathing, alive. Relief slammed into him like a physical force, and before he could stop himself, he was running.

“Garrick?” Her voice was soft, tinted with disbelief, but he didn’t let her say anything more.

He cupped her face with calloused hands and kissed her. It was desperate and raw, a culmination of weeks of worry and unspoken feelings. She froze for a moment, and then she melted into him, her hands gripping his tunic as if to anchor herself.

When he finally pulled away, their foreheads touched, both of them breathing hard.

“You made it,” he said hoarsely, his voice breaking under the weight of his emotions.

“I told you I would,” she whispered, her lips curving into a soft smile that stole the breath from his lungs.

Garrick shook his head, a low chuckle rumbling in his chest. “You’re impossible, you know that?”

“And you’re dramatic,” she shot back, but there was no heat in her words, just warmth.

He pulled her into his arms, holding her close as the chaos of the arena swirled around them. For the first time in weeks, he felt something other than fear. Hope. Maybe, just maybe, they’d make it through this war together.

Sunk Cost Fallodyssey

I spent $2.72 buying Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game and was dismayed to discover that Codeweavers Crossover would only install, but not run the executable.

Unwilling to give up, I spent a few hours attempting different Crossover bottle tweaks before stumbling onto the existence of the Fallout: Community Edition project, a modern reimplementation of the game's engine with compatibility for modern computers.

At last, the game launched successfully, and I learned from the opening cinematic that war is transformative but static, and was allowed to access the character creation screen:

Since I don't know anything about Fallout, I decided to create a character based on Kaladin Stormblessed from the Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive novels. In Sanderson's story, Kaladin is an unlucky son of a small-town physician somehow trapped in a cycle of being beaten within an inch of death while everyone else around him is killed, losing whatever job he had at the time, and ending up with a new job that is somehow more dangerous.

I started by lowering my character's luck stat to the game's floor of 1 (Very Bad), then re-investing the spare points into maxing out his endurance at 10 (Heroic) and bumping up his agility, charisma, and intelligence a bit each. I took a point out of perception because Sanderson's Kaladin usually needs obvious things explained to him.

For his three Tag Skills, I selected Melee Weapons, First Aid, and Doctor since Sanderson's Kaladin had training both as a spearman and as a physician.

For the first of his two optional traits, I selected Good Natured, which dropped his combat skills but boosted his First Aid, Doctor, Speech, and Barter abilities. My other choice here was Jinxed, which causes both the character and everyone around them to roll critical failures more often.

I started the game and died a dozen times to random encounters in the wastes. I was still having fun, but admit that I was growing a bit discouraged when I finally found my first actual spear on a random corpse giant molerats were dining on family-style.

Since grabbing the spear and fleeing those molerats, things have been looking up! I hit level two and have reached Vault 15 with far fewer deaths. The vault itself seems to be in poor repair, but without a rope to drop down the elevator shaft, I may need to continue my adventure elsewhere...

Please I want to know more about what animals you think Dick and Damian should’ve been in Beastworld

This Got long and I’m not even posting half of it. First, sorry this took so long. Secondly I haven’t read Beastworld, so I’m not exactly answering for that book. And lastly, I know you asked about Dick and Damian specifically, but to answer that I will have to address Bruce. 

My two cents on What animal represents [Bruce, Dick and Damian] in my biased opinion ? 

First: big daddy, Bruce Wayne

His most famous associated animals are bats and wolves, but I don’t think they fully capture his heart. My argument? He’s a silverback gorilla. Here’s why:

Looks intimidating, actually ridiculous.

Leads through dominance. Silverbacks call the shots; others follow. (His "sons" may assist, but they execute his orders—they don’t co-lead.)

Bruce’s core trauma is losing his parents, which left him afraid of new connections. He craves bonds but is held back by fear.

Wolves and bats are social creatures; they form families and raise their young together. But where they don’t fit Bruce is that they thrive on cooperation. Being a team player isn’t his style—he tolerates it at best.

Wolves are pack hunters, while Bruce prefers to work alone. He’s more of a protector than a hunter to me. His goal is to defend his domain (Gotham), and to do that, he establishes Batman’s dominance—which fits a silverback better than a wolf.

Bruce is an absolute unit. He uses his size and strength to intimidate first. Everyone who doesn’t know him sees that threatening glare and imposing presence and fears him… but secretly, he’s a tired dad of five.

It’s also funny how gorillas are portrayed in media (King Kong: scary, monstrous) versus what they actually are: family-oriented gentle giants who only fight when threatened, care deeply for their young, and grieve their losses. They’re silent protectors. Sound familiar? That’s the mainstream’s view of Batman versus who he really is.

In conclusion, a wolf or a bat might describe aspects of Bruce, but they don’t capture his subtext and heart. To me, the silverback gorilla does.

Second: Our favorite loyal son, Dick Grayson

Now, here’s the real wolf of the Bat-family—but not for the angst they project onto Bruce.

Looks cute, actually scary. (Don’t pet the murder dog.)

Wolves are social; their pack is family. Dick is naturally social and adopts people as ride-or-die kin.

No “lone wolf” nonsense. If wolves leave, it’s to find food or form a new pack—just like Dick, pre Crisis Dock just felt like he out grown his Robin custom left and built his own family (the Titans).

Wolves thrive in teams. There’s no squad Dick can’t lead; he’s the ultimate cooperator.

They lead through trust and respect, not dominance—Opposite to Batman and just like Nightwing.

Wolves aren’t the biggest predators, but they’re fast, agile, and win through teamwork. Fits Dick’s acrobatic, hit-and-flip fighting style.

Bruce’s tantrum over Dick leaving? Yeah, that was his emotional support puppy growing up.

I don’t feel like there is a strong reason to make big comparison between wolf a foxes. I feel like its too obvious i honestly was shocked they even thought about making dick a fox of all beings. Foxes are cooperative but solitary, they know a lot of friends but won’t necessarily call it a ‘family’. They are registered as “low threat” which lets be real, even regular mob in Gotham knows not to miss with nightwing he is not ‘low threat’ etc etc

Lastly: the most Responsible baby in the world, Damian Wayne

I feel like I should point out that a lot of Damian personally get confused with his Trauma, but I don’t have time to dive into that so lets jump to the direct answer of the question

From what I’ve seen, Damian gets labeled a "cat" to paint him as rebellious, independent, and aloof. I’ll argue this is a shallow take that misses on the his core qualities. and, just like with his father, it fails to capture his heart.

Damian’s core quality imo isn’t ‘arrogance’ its his sense of responsibility.

Some confuse Damian’s violence and stubbornness for pure rebellion. But his independence isn’t about defiance; it’s his determination to do whatever it takes to ensure the group’s success.

inter the Anatolian Shepherd. Independent but devoted. take their responsibility very seriously, you can depend on them 100%. strong fighters who are able to take down wolves, big cats and even on some accounts, bears (?). They Have a habit of taking charge and micro organize the ’flock’ so I can imagine the rest going like “oh god here he comes to see how i got myself injured” lmao

Anatolians are loyal to their flock but don’t see themselves as servants—they’re equals in ensuring the group’s survival. Damian has outright told both his Batmen (Bruce and Dick) that he’s their equal. He doesn’t wait for orders; he decides when to act. Its BECAUSE he have a huge sense of responsibility he would defy orders, hence why he mistakenly gets labeled as “rebellious” aka a cat.

Once Damian felt respected by the Batfam (first Dick, and Stephanie), he started taking active responsibility for them. Even in the League of Assassins, his drive was never "I want this" or "I deserve this"—it was "My family’s honor depends on me." again, responsibility not ego

Anatolians aren’t predators; they’re guardians. Why does Damian care about Gotham? He didn’t grow up there. It’s simple: It’s his father’s home, its where his now family is, so he’ll protect it. His entire arc with Bruce echoes this: "Your son will not fail you." “I had to do it, to protect our kingdom”

Anatolians aren’t tyrants—they’re trusted because they’re good at their job. Damian doesn’t demand obedience for power’s sake (he’s handed authority to Dick and Bruce willingly). He loses it when others disrespect him because they assume he’s selfish or incompetent. Dick broke through to him by respecting him—he just needed Damian to work with him. Its so so important to understand Dick didn’t ‘tame’ Damian, he earned the right to lead him. Anatolians follow equals, not masters.

At the end I don’t think Damian is a Cat or an Attack dog or even a falcon for many reasons, but essentially: non of them fit or explain his deep devotion to his loved ones, his fundamental sense of responsibility. or his strong sense of duty. Damian is like an Anatolian Shepherd—responsible, disciplined, and protective. (Also it doesn’t help this kid just keep collecting farm animals wherever he goes, and be shown feeding and introducing them like he can’t help it)

Regarding the recent lay offs, the focus should be on the people and not really on the game itself. Meaning I and many others care more about the people than we do about a new game in this franchise. We don't want a new game no matter what, and it thankfully shows in the discussions I see around here.

Furthermore, the studio (with EA) doesn't have a good recent track record that would make make some of us see this whole "reimagining" between different development cycles as leading to something good. It feels like it will contribute more to a crunch-filled future with stressed employees than a "more agile, focused" studio.

Michael Douse has a lot of interesting things to say about it, including:

"To make it absolutely clear, what I hate about the way layoffs are carried out is that they are done *before* decision makers know what to do with a studio, and not as a result of figuring out a direction. This is consistently true. It is a short term cost saving measure at a huge human expense that doesn’t solve a long term problem. (A lack of a viable strategic direction defined at an executive level)."

and

"It is possible not to layoff large parts of your development teams between or after projects. Critically, retaining that institutional knowledge is key for the next."

And those decisions might not lead to a good game, but really, at this point it's not about the game itself. Good or bad, it feels like the snake biting its own tail: at this point, the game matters because cancelling it will mean more lay offs. 

I sincerely hope they will all find new jobs soon, and that there isn't a new wave of lay offs coming for those staying behind like they're fearing right now. It would be incredibly cruel. And I do hope Gamble himself will be mindful about the way he talks about this :'(

Addressing a single executive order from Donald Trump’s voluminous first-day edicts is like singling out one bullet in a burst from an AK-47. But one of them hit me in the gut. That is “Establishing and Implementing the President’s Department of Government Efficiency.’’ The acronym for that name is DOGE (named after a memecoin), and it’s the Elon Musk–led effort to cut government spending by a trillion bucks or two. Though DOGE was, until this week, pitched as an outside body, this move makes it an official part of government—by embedding it in an existing agency that was formerly part of the Office of Management and Budget called the United States Digital Service. The latter will now be known as the US DOGE Service, and its new head will be more tightly connected to the president, reporting to his chief of staff.

The new USDS will apparently shift its former laser focus on building cost-efficient and well-designed software for various agencies to a hardcore implementation of the Musk vision. It’s kind of like a government version of a SPAC, the dodgy financial maneuver that launched Truth Social in the public market without ever having to reveal a coherent business plan to underwriters.

The order is surprising in a sense because, on its face, DOGE seems more limited than its original super ambitious pitch. This iteration seems more tightly centered on saving money through streamlining and modernizing the government’s massive and messy IT infrastructure. There are big savings to be had, but a handful of zeros short of trillions. As of yet, it’s uncertain whether Musk will become the DOGE administrator. It doesn’t seem big enough for him. (The first USDS director, Mikey Dickerson, jokingly posted on LinkedIn, “I’d like to congratulate Elon Musk on being promoted to my old job.”) But reportedly Musk pushed for this structure as a way to embed DOGE in the White House. I hear that inside the Executive Office Building, there are numerous pink Post-it notes claiming space even beyond USDS’s turf, including one such note on the former chief information officers’ enviable office. So maybe this could be a launch pad for a more sweeping effort that will eliminate whole agencies and change policies. (I was unable to get a White House representative to answer questions, which isn’t surprising considering that there are dozens of other orders that equally beg for explanation.)

One thing is clear—this ends United States Digital Service as it previously existed, and marks a new, and maybe perilous era for the USDS, which I have been enthusiastically covering since its inception. The 11-year-old agency sprang out of the high-tech rescue squad salvaging the mess that was Healthcare.gov, the hellish failure of a website that almost tanked the Affordable Care Act. That intrepid team of volunteers set the template for the agency: a small group of coders and designers who used internet-style techniques (cloud not mainframe; the nimble “agile” programming style instead of the outdated “waterfall” technique) to make government tech as nifty as the apps people use on their phones. Its soldiers, often leaving lucrative Silicon Valley jobs, were lured by the prospect of public service. They worked out of the agency’s funky brownstone headquarters on Jackson Place, just north of the White House. The USDS typically took on projects that were mired in centi-million contracts and never completed—delivering superior results within weeks. It would embed its employees in agencies that requested help, being careful to work collaboratively with the lifers in the IT departments. A typical project involved making DOD military medical records interoperable with the different systems used by the VA. The USDS became a darling of the Obama administration, a symbol of its affiliation with cool nerddom.

During the first Trump administration, deft maneuvering kept the USDS afloat—it was the rare Obama initiative that survived. Its second-in-command, Haley Van Dyck, cleverly got buy-in from Trump’s in-house fixer, Jared Kushner. When I went to meet Kushner for an off-the-record talk early in 2017, I ran into Van Dyck in the West Wing; she gave me a conspiratorial nod that things were looking up, at least for the moment. Nonetheless, the four Trump years became a balancing act in sharing the agency’s achievements while somehow staying under the radar. “At Disney amusement parks, they paint things that they want to be invisible with this certain color of green so that people don't notice it in passing,” one USDSer told me. “We specialized in painting ourselves that color of green.” When Covid hit, that became a feat in itself, as USDS worked closely with White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx on gathering statistics—some of which the administration wasn’t eager to publicize.

By the end of Trump’s term, the green paint was wearing thin. A source tells me that at one point a Trump political appointee noticed—not happily—that USDS was recruiting at tech conferences for lesbians and minorities, and asked why. The answer was that it was an effective way to find great product managers and designers. The appointee accepted that but asked if, instead of putting “Lesbians Who Tech” on the reimbursement line, could they just say LWT?

Under Biden no subterfuge was needed—the USDS thrived. But despite many months of effort, it could not convince Congress to give it permanent funding. With the return of Trump, and his promises to cut government spending, there was reason to think that USDS would evaporate. That’s why the DOGE move is kind of bittersweet—at least it now has more formal recognition and ostensibly will get a reliable budget line.

How will the integration work? The executive order mandates that in addition to normal duties the USDS director will also head a temporary organization “dedicated to advancing the President’s 18-month DOGE agenda.” That agenda is not clearly defined, but elsewhere the order speaks of improving the quality and efficiency of government-wide software, systems, and infrastructure. More specific is the mandate to embed four-person teams inside every agency to help realize the DOGE agenda. The order is very explicit that the agency must provide “full and prompt access to all unclassified agency records, software systems, and IT systems.” Apparently Musk is obsessed with an unprecedented centralization of the data that makes the government go—or not. This somewhat adversarial stance is a dramatic shift from the old USDS MO of working collegially with the lifers inside the agencies.

Demanding all that data might be a good thing. Clare Martorana, who until last week was the nation’s chief information officer, says that while she saw many victories during her eight years in government tech, making big changes has been tough, in large part because of the difficulty of getting such vital data. “We have budget data that is incomprehensible,” she says. “The agency understands it, but they hide money in all kinds of places, so no one can really get a 100,000-foot view. How many open positions do they have? What are the skill sets? What are their top contracts? When are they renegotiating their most important contracts? How much do they spend on operations and maintenance versus R&D or innovation? You should know all these things.” If DOGE gets that information and uses it well, it could be transformational. “Through self-reporting, we spend $120 billion on IT,” she says “If we found all the hidden money and shadow IT, it's $200, $300, maybe $500 billion. We lose a lot of money on technology we buy stupidly, and we don't deliver services to the American public that they deserve.” So this Trump effort could be a great thing? “I’m trying very hard to be optimistic about it,” says Martorana. The USDS’s outgoing director, Mina Hsiang, is also trying to be upbeat. “I think there's a tremendous opportunity,” she says. “ I don't know what [DOGE] will do with it, but I hope that they listen to a lot of great folks who are there.”

On the other hand, those four-person teams could be a blueprint for mayhem. Up until now, USDS would send only engineers and designers into agencies, and their focus was to build things and hopefully set an example for the full-timers to do work like they do at Google or Amazon. The EO dictates only one engineer in a typical four-person team, joined by a lawyer (not known for building stuff), an HR person (known for firing people), and a “team lead” whose job description sounds like a political enforcer: “implementing the president’s DOGE Agenda.” I know that’s a dark view, but Elon Musk —and his new boss—are no strangers to clearing out a workplace. Maybe they’ll figure AI can do things better.

Whichever way it goes, the original Obama-era vibes of the USDS may forever be stilled—to be superseded by a different kind of idealist in MAGA garb. As one insider told me, “USDS leadership is pretty ill equipped to navigate the onslaught of these DOGE guys, and they are going to get the shit kicked out of them.” Though not perfect, the USDS has by dint of hard work, mad skills, and corny idealism, made a difference. Was there really a need to embed the DOGE experiment into an agency that was doing good? And what are the odds that on July 4, 2026, when the “temporary” DOGE experiment is due to end, the USDS will sunset as well? At best, the new initiative might help unravel the near intractable train wreck that is government IT. But at worst, the integration will be like a greedy brain worm wreaking havoc on its host.
